THE ELEVATOR BIT
Elevators are a popular bit in Western Riding, when ridden with a loose rein contact. Its distinctive long cheeks (shanks) extend generously in equal length both below and above the bit’s mouthpiece. It is available in a selection of mouthpieces to accommodate a range of different mouth types and requirements.
As a member of the Lever family, it acts similarly to a Pelham bit but has no curb chain.
Two reins can be used and on the top rein the action would be that of a Snaffle bit upon the lips, tongue and bars.
On cheek designs with broad flat cheeks it may be helpful to get your saddler to fit strips of smooth panel leather around the top section of the cheek above the mouthpiece to help prevent any rubbing of the face.
HOW WE MEASURE OUR ELEVATORS
Please note, that we define the cheek of the Elevator from the top to the bottom, as shown in the image. Standard cheeks are 9.5” long.
Our mouth width is the measurement of the mouth between the ring pieces and not the full length of the mouthpiece.
Remember not to have too tight of a fit. You should always leave a little room on each side for comfort.
