HANDCRAFTED DOOR KNOCKERS

Among the huge variety of high-quality metalwork produced in our Walsall-based foundry, our brass door knockers are among the most popular. Door knockers are thought to date back hundreds of years – some going back as early as Tudor times in the sixteenth century. Our skilled blacksmiths continue to produce beautiful designs using traditional manufacturing techniques.

We have a comprehensive range of styles and designs to suit every front door.

All our door knockers are made from solid brass.

DID YOU KNOW

• Door knockers shaped like a hand have long been believed to be a sign of protection for the home.

• Lion’s head door knockers were once symbols of power and strength, and particularly associated with military leaders in the Georgian era. No. 10 Downing Street boasts a fine example of a lion’s head door knocker as a symbol of power and strength.

• In Victorian times, it was popular to have a highly polished brass door knocker and the bigger and more ornate the door knocker, the higher the social standing of the homeowner. Alternatively, door knockers were an easy way to display your profession. Fish door knockers or other maritime themes, for example, used to symbolise the home of a shipping merchant. Now they are popular with people living on the coast.

These days you may want to choose a brass door knocker depicting a much loved animal or a family connection. We have a multitude of horse designs and various dog breed designs, as well as harp and Celtic cross designs.
